A clogged fuel filter can result in poor high rev performance due to insufficient fuel flow, which leans out the mixture to beyond the misfire point. When was it last changed?
It's more likely to first occur at WOT in the upper gears because maximum fuel flow is required for more time than first and second.
My experience with a clogged fuel filter on my '63 Corvette years ago caused the engine to essentially shut down at over 6000 revs - almost like switching off the ignition. Once the carb bowl was empty, that was it. On a modern FI engine a clogged filter will cause a loss of fuel pressure at high fuel flows, which may just cause hesitation or misfire when it leans out enough due to the lower delivery pressure at the injectors.
