Hello Peaches,
My alternator failed so I had to replace it. The charging systems of 1962 included separate components like voltage regulator, rectifier and solenoid that are now built into alternators. I believe the original part was called a Dynamo? instead of Alternator?
The alternator I installed bolts on and fits nicely. Had to wire in correct GM plug compatible with a 1992 Chevy Camaro. If my car was a Gull Wing or some other exotic valuable car I would keep every component original, but my car will never be judged that way. Functionality is my goal.
This install was not rocket science. I had to turn two bolts and measure current with my voltage meter. Also installed a voltage gauge so I can see that it is charging correctly. Also installed plugs to connect a solar one amp trickle charger to maintain the battery since it is not driven daily. The clock and radio can drain the battery after a month of not driving it.
Going for a ride in the Emerald Bullet tomorrow!
