Check your glow plugs. My 1999 E300TD was very quiet on cold starts for the first 3 years, then one morning a month ago I got a bit more clatter and some minor shaking and smoke until the engine was warm a few minutes later. Had all glow plugs replaced under warranty. Problem gone.
