Your pump is the earlier one w/ rubber diaphragm. In mine, there is a vacuum cavity under that cap, so without it I don't think I would get any vacuum. I would get another vac pump at the junkyard. The pump can fail in ways that will damage your timing chain and possibly ruin the whole engine.
