No spuds on the barge almost guaranteed that was going to happen, there is no way to easily make those kinds of adjustments to the vessel's center of gravity without risking catastrophic instability of the platform.

Years ago I worked around bridge construction of big interstate bridges crossing Big Muddy and other big rivers. Lifting barges would always be much larger than needed for just the space requirements and usually they had 100' spuds at least on every corner sometimes more.

They where lifting very large, pre-stressed, pre-cast components into place I never witnessed anything like this total failure, losing both cranes as well as the lift! I have seen tackle failures that dropped massive weight onto a barge deck but they never compromised the entire platform.
