Try a boat primer put in series with the supply line to the prefilter and use that as your primer sure saves cranking.
UPDATE: Went to HF and bought their 7 Pc 3/8 In. Drive Metric Long Reach Ball Head Hex Socket Set and removing/installing those intake manifold bolts became much easier. And sure enough, some of the glow plug leads had become pointed upwards when I had tightened the end nuts.

I reoriented the upward-pointing leads, installed a new glow plug fuse, rechecked that everything was clear and turned on the key (glow position). Waited for about 20 seconds; no blown fuse, so went ahead and cranked with no intake manifold. Three chugs and the engine started! Hurray!

Now I'm off to reinstall the manifold. Are there any tricks to reinstalling the cross-over pipe and getting the gaskets in place all at the same time?
