i had heard that about ravi>nora, but had forgotten. wow! sometimes they show the origional woodstock clips on bravo, and his performance just HAS to be one of the most memorable of ALL time. the intensity is incredible!
as for sparse phrases (and off key/tune punches) , im a MONK man. also see miles. im only beginning to really enjoy the frenetic "wall of sound" that coltrane explored. other recent finds are cannonball adderly and horace silver.
one strong suggestion- if you are a monk fan, checkout carmen mcrae's "carmen sings monk". she addes lyrics to 15 of monks standards that is incredible. WARNING: you can never again hear a monk song without the lyrics floating in your head. its one of my absolute favorite CDs, and its well worth nearly any price.
