The switch on the clutch peddle is to disengage the Cruise Control.
I don`t think any of the W123 manual cars had a safety starting switch on the clutch peddle.
The mechanic may have wired it that way.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto
