My Fitness Pal app
Anyone else use this app on their phones?
I've been tracking my diet recently, and have lowered my caloric intake to sub 1500 per day. You enter your meal or recipe, and it will calculate the portion size and calories of the portion, and you add it to a diary. Once entered, it subtracts from your caloric goal for the day.
For example...Yesterday I made a fruit smoothie for breakfast, which clocked in at 345 calories. For lunch, I had a huge, and I mean huge salad which clocked in at 154 calories. Most of those calories came from the salad dressing. For a snack, I had a half a cucumber and a handful of olives, which came in to just under 60 calories. That meant I still had around 940 calories left for dinner. For dinner, I had a 6" roast beef sub from Subway, which came in at 320 calories. For desert, I had a sugar free popcicle at 20 calories. I ended my day with less than 1000 calories taken in.
The database used in this application is vast, and has information on nearly any food you can think of. If you can't find it, you can scan the product's bar code and it will pull the data from that. It's really simple to use.
Being a diabetic, and now on insulin, losing weight is even more difficult for me. My glucose numbers are finally under control (another medication prescribed really screwed those numbers up for me), but I gained 8 pounds inside of 2 weeks after starting. In a week of using the app, I've lost 4 of those pounds easily.
I've found it amazing at the amount and selection of foods that I can eat that won't contribute to weight gain. Heck...a bag of spring mix salad, which makes one hell of a big salad, is only 20 calories. 2 tablespoons of dressing, which is one serving, is nearly 100 calories. I have learned that I can add a table spoon of red wine vinegar and a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar to it, and really bring some great flavor to an otherwise boring salad, without adding calories and very little sugar.
Since exercise is nearly impossible for me, and the fact that the doctor has told me to not even try out of safety, calorie counting is the only way for me to do this.
If anyone else is using the app, what are your experiences with it? Has it helped you like it seems to be helping me?
