I have used WD40 sprayed out of a warm can (room temp) and the kerosene in the mix does help.

I would not go the starting fluid route.

Plus, the block heater and warm oil of the right viscosity will start a diesel at -4 F, like it did for me last winter w/o anything else special, just std routine.
