If that did happen he must have felt pretty crappy afterwards since it could have been easily prevented with well placed towels and plywood. Good that one didn't hit him in the eye.

Hmm...
My 87 TD STARTED easily with three cylinders dead... ip not sending fuel to three cylinders. Pulled injection lines off, and it easily kept idling. Possibly was running on oil though... I didn't try starting it with the injectors out... Maybe I should...
