I don't think brake pads were your problem. From your description the warning message sounds like the SBC unit (the brake by wire thing) has faulted. You'll need to go to either the dealer or a Mercedes specialist independent for repair. The SBC unit will need to be replaced. Expect the cost to be $1500-$2000.
