It's amazing how cities get laid out.

Manhattan - pure grid
Brooklyn and the Bronx - complete maze
Chicago - grid to the extreme, some of the streets extend straight for 40+ miles well into the suburbs.

LA is a complete mixed up mess.

So is the DFW Metroplex. Let's build a perimeter around the city, except don't complete the circle on the northeast side. Then paste it together 20 years later with a toll road.

I think they hit a mirror with a hammer, put it back together, and said, that looks cool, let's use that for a street layout - that is Atlanta. And for good measure, call every third road Peachtree or some variant thereof.

Columbia Sc is kind of cool downtown. It's a grid for the most part, but with a twist. When the city was built, someone heard an urban legend that mosquitoes can't travel more than 100 yards. Many of the streets downtown (Main, Gervais, Assembly, Elmwood, Huger, Hampton) are 100 yards wide, which makes for easy driving. That is seriously wide for an urban street.
