Bingo, I'd try to find a decent engine in a rusted or totaled body and swap that in, save a LOT of time and effort IF you can find a good donor.

I've R/R'd the head twice on my OM603 in my wagon, takes way too much of my time and if I could source a donor when the risk of deeper damage or wear is an issue, I'd try that route. Of course, that's easy to say when I've never done an engine swap, so take all this with a nice big grain of salt.
