Bullcrap -- most people will still own vehicles outside of urban areas. A large portion of people like using their vehicles to store "stuff" and don't like sharing seats with random people who just sat there. Also, they tend to want to go NOW, not wait 5-10 minutes for a vehicle to show up.

Also, yay. More fat turds in the US. The only exercise some Americans get is walking across a parking lot, and this is about to go bye-bye if the sensory deprivation bubble picks people up at the door and drops them off, then goes to park or on another trip. Not to mention that autonomous cars will make sprawl much easier to live with. They'll take us back to the Robert Moses ideal of the car-based future. And can you imagine walking or cycling if cum-pootah driven cars are doing this?

As far as cars-as-a-service. Just what we god damn need. Every trip being tied to a credit card #, with start and end points stored for life. Helloooooo surveillance state. Sometimes progress makes me wish for a massive economic collapse to kick that crap a few more years into the future. What's going on with China and the stock market is a good start -- hopefully it will spread and get much, much nastier before it gets better.

I don't see a brighter future. I see more social isolation, surveillance, and sickness. Maybe it's time for me to start looking at developing countries where there won't be money to implement this abortion of a society until well after I'm dead.
