If you have a portable generator or gas lawn mower, try that same test. I read that the small gas engines are way dirtier than modern vehicle engines. Do Not enter garage until properly ventilating it. Or youtube, confined space carbon monoxide dangers.
Also home carbon monoxide detectors do not sample the air continuously, only in some predetermined interval, maybe every fifteen minutes or so.
