I just recently (last fall) sold a 99 4.3 Express van. It would tow a fully loaded car trailer, I got rid of it because the suspension was a bit light for a work van. No complaints on the motor, which was bulletproof as hatterasguy states

I dont think the motor will be a problem, but with a horse trailer I think the rear of the 1500 may be low. Worth looking into. You may have the same light suspension problems I had.
