On my 617->107 swap I'm using the entire stock system with both the resonator and muffler. It's been over 100k miles on that setup with no noticeable negative effects. One data point doesn't disprove the theory, but I'd say it's reasonably significant. The only thing I notice is that if I drive "normally" for a long time, when I do finally jump on it I get a nice "annoy-a-Prius" soot cloud.
The only thing I thought significant when I did the swap was to ensure that the cross section area of the two exhaust sections (617 down pipe and 107 exhaust pipe) was close.
