Linking new tech to old tech

To any techie-types here -
Is the HDMI output found on today's video players and computers a digital or analog signal?
Reason I ask is I want to record video from the HDMI outputs of video sources, or my Acer Chromebook, to my existing VCR or DVD recorder.
Leasing a DVR from Cox or Verizon is not an option.
My Chromebook only supports a 'read only' external DVD drive.
Buying a 'real' computer isn't an option either right now.
I've seen HDMI to component AV cables and converters advertised on Amazon and other sites, from about $10 to $60. But no one around here stocks the devices for me to examine. So should I order a cable or do I need some sort of digital to analog converter?
Thanks.

Happy Motoring, Mark
