I tackled this job last year on my W210 wagon. The spring has to be removed and there is a special compression tool you can use if you want to do it right or just support the bottom of the arm with something suitable and release the tension slowly. If its a 4Matic, it will be somewhat easier with the front axles removed

While you are in there, check the condition of the Ball Joints, Sway bar bushings, upper and lower control arm bushings and engine mounts. For the driver side mount, it is easier to replace it with the axle, spring and shock out of the way which is why I mentioned it
