It might still be an axle problem. How many miles are on your vehicle?

On mine, a W126, I found a worn out CV joint. There wasn't any leaking or cracked boots. The only thing noticeable was a rumble that I originally mistook for a driveshaft problem.

However, when I raised the rear and left the suspension hanging, I noticed a strange offset, or s-curve, in the worn joint. It was very evident when I removed the axle!! I'm glad that it didn't come apart while on the highway!
