California Diesel Smog Check Requirement - Do diesel cars or trucks need smog tests?
Visual inspection is under the hood for any modifications. Tail pipe test is done with a light meter. No visible smoke is allowed from the crank case or tail pipe during idle. Light meter is used during the SNAP test (dyno under load). The diesel can fail at any of these points. Permanent AWD vehicles are exempt from the dyno test.
