That is sure suspicious! He doesn't tell you until you want to fix. Looks like he wants to keep your vehical there and squeeze more money out of you. Typical mechanic: all they want is as much money as possible, even to the detriment of the client. Only once met a good mechanic, but only works on modern Volkswagens.

If I was in your shoes, I at least check with a highly recommended transmission shop here on the Peach. If don't want to do that, consider Tom's or other offers and replace the unit.
