I just called my local welding supply shop.....
he keeps a couple of Nitrogen/5% hydrogen available for an HVAC person who uses it for leak checking on Home AC equipment.
The gas alone for the 300 cubic foot cylinder ( the size cylinder the do not sell outright ... a common situation which applies to certain big acetylene and oxy cylinders also ) cost $138. JUST THE GAS inside the cylinder... there would be a $6.50 charge per month for the rental of that cylinder also... and a $125 deposit on the cylinder.
They DO sell the 200 cubic foot cylinder for $274... so you would own it and not be paying the $6.50 per month rental . The gas for that cylinder would cost $118 . So $392 out the door. So if you did little AC leak testing and it took you years to use up that cylinder you would not be accruing the rental charge.

So for about $650 dollars you too can use nitrogen and hydrogen for sniffing out leaks in your system.
