Job finally done with the help of the tool pictured here. Harbor Freight is the source but I have never seen such a tool elsewhere. Seems to be well made.

Reversible ratchet with a flex head at each end. Pushbutton socket release, 1/4" drive at one end, 3/8" at the other and a nice long reach. I think I'll find a lot of uses for this one.
