Good morning,
I just picked up a 1979 280CE with a dubious history. The owner had dropped it off with a mechanic friend and said, what does it need. He was provided with the following list:
1979 MEB 280CE Needs:
Kick down linkage
Torque Converter bolts
shift linkage adjustable rod
Cap $58.65 Bosch
Rotor $6.35 Bosch
Plugs $1.98 ea
Wires $92.23
Oil
Filter
Antifreeze
Alternator $200
Fuel Pump $155.76
Oil Filter housing or fittings or fittings to hook up oil pressure line.
16 hours labor $400
The following parts are in the trunk:
Alternator
Fuel filter housing
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Fan w/ clutch
Fan shroud
Air Cleaner
In the documentation, Fuel pump was replaced on Aug 8, 2012 (have not tested pump, but the positive screw terminal has snapped off)
There is a receipt that says 2-2-05, New servo Unit $774. (not sure what part was replaced)
Looks to have been regularly serviced until at least 2000 by the same mechanic (no business name on the records, but definitely a European based on the hand writing.
I would love to get this thing running, however, I am much more familiar with the 300D and unfortunately it doesn't seem to be near as much information on the W123 gassers available online, so I could definitely use some help.
So here's my biggest challenge. It looks like the mechanic took a lot of stuff apart and did not put it all back together before I got the car.
I know the following are missing:
Oil filter housing bolts - need to find replacements, unsure of size
Distributor hold down bolt - need replacement, unsure of size
Fan belts
Coolant overflow reservoir
Radiator cap
Battery
I am attaching pictures of the engine bay, as I just don't have a good diagram of what should be in there.
Could you chime is with any parts you recognize as missing?
I appreciate any help you can provide.
This is also posted over on benzworld but I haven't gotten much in the way of responses
