They only made 4 years of the W210 with diesel for the US market, 96-99. These are mechanically injected engines OM606. 96-97 non turbo, 98-99 are turbo. The pump is computer controlled, they took the sensor and actuator concept from the OM 603 EDS system and used it to control the fuel. The pedal does not connect to the IP directly, you move a potentiometer and that tells the computer how fast you wish to go.
The next time US got a diesel was for 2 years in the W211, 2005, and 2006. These have OM648 first generation CDI engines. Inline 6 cylinder.
In 2007 they introduced the OM642 V6 CDI engine. Available in the gen 2 W211, as well as the W164 (ML), X164 (GL) and R251 (R), and the Sprinter. The 2007 year there was only a passive particulate filter. In 2008 they added the urea injection to the W211 but the ML and GL the urea did not come until 2009. The trademark name for the urea system is Bluetec.
There are many tales of people running greater than B5 in the CDI engines. MB recommendation is no more than B5. I am curious how they are handling the B20 mandate now active in several states.
