You can do that, but only if the nipples on the plastic fitting are intact - that's what I did, but I got a decent fitting at the junk yard. It's very tricky to get that fitting free of the hard nylon tube. You have to CAREFULLY cut the nylon so you can remove it without damaging the fitting....or breaking the nipples in the process.
