On a W123 Mercedes blocking the vent hole causes the crankcase pressure to build up and shut the Engine Down because the Crankcase Pressure pushes the Vacuum Shutoff on the Fuel Injection Pump in the shut off direction.

If the Engine does not shut off something else gives. One Member had the front crank seal pop out.
