I'm not familiar with your particular model, but most M-Bs have three position switches built into the light unit. One position is "always off," another is "always on," and the third allows the light to be activated by the door switch together with the footwell lights. Try pushing on the lens portion of the lamp unit to discover the three positions or, if all else fails, consult the owner's manual.
