The hose pieces should be a snug fit in the holes they go through. And the "pins" should also be snug going through the bores. The pins I've seen have soft "barbs" at the tips. The hose pieces should be short enough to allow the barbs to clear the bore on the other side (see Rick76's post, first image). When inserting the pins they'll kinda pop into place when pushed through all the way.
