Bush hasn't brought the economy back. Greenspan can't drop interest rates any lower to provide stimulus. Clinton didn't bring peace to the middle east, and Bush Sr. sure as heck didn't do anything that brought it closer, either.
What progress has really been made by any US government since 1975? The economy still booms and busts, often built on paper fortunes like false real estate values or Yahoo, the great company with a Billion Dollar Capitalization and no sales, and no hope for sales. Has a US president made a dent in the erosion of the middle class and/or lowered the rate of poverty? How about diplomacy and peace?
Ronald Reagan would like to take credit for some ridiculous "supply side" economics that supposedly created the boom cycle of 1985(ish). Then, what happened in 1990? Geez, who knows, Ronnie was gone, leaving Bush Sr. holding the bag. Bush made war, but left it hanging. Clinton continued the war, but under the guise of the "no fly zone." The no-war war. Just dragging it out? Economic recovery was already coming when Clinton took office, but it was too late for Bush. People associated him with recession, no matter how good the Gulf War looked.
Most every government, both in the US and Canada, for the last few dacades, at least, has done nothing but work on self-preservation and their own self-interests post-public-service. They have allowed corporate lobby groups, armed with money, to make "unfettered capitalism" practically a religion. A religion without democratic accountability and with centralized power. Capitalism is recognized as the strongest modern economic system, but totalitarian capitalism might end being a reality, and not a single leader has the balls to stand up and turn down the pay-day. Reagan, Bush, Clinton, what was the real difference between any of them? Government and business together are supposed to serve the needs of the community, of the citizens, NOT the other way around.
Does anyone think GWB will leave his presidency leaving a true leagacy of positive change behind? Let's hope so, because at least he'll be the first one in a looong time.
