'05 E320 Radio Dead Update

The tech article cited was exceptional; however my display seems to be working, but not the radio itself. My car has the base radio and CD player, not the navigation system.
Isn't the actual radio unit remotely mounted, and not included in the display?
is there a fuse?
By the way: during the same trip when I found the radio not working, the Check Engine illuminated. Nothing seems amiss performance-wise and there are "NO MESSAGES" on the service display.
I noticed the Car in the garage this morning: I can hear a very faint sound like a tiny electric motor running. It seems to be in the rear of the Car, possibly either in the driver's side of the trunk, or perhaps underneath. It does not seem to be the brake pump.
