The "italian tune up" is slang for running the car very fast to get the engine rpm and temps high- thus "burning" off any residue and built up carbon. If your engine is otherwise healthy this is a common tactic with all diesels to improve daily performance; run them at full load for a spell. In marine diesels it's as long as 10-15 minutes at wide open after a day of cruising.
