I am sure it was not an option. But according to that thread (or perhaps elsewhere?), I think I read that MB put in a 5-speed in one or two specially built cars.
I can't understand going to a lot of trouble to convert a 4-speed to a 5-speed for practical reasons. But just as an interesting project? Why not!
