I can't see how to gain access without removing the dash, but that seems ridiculous.

Had mine done at Safelite for about $250 and never looked back. Looking at the shop manual for my E300d, I would have had to pull half the car apart to do the job. They finished the job in under 2 hours, and you would never even know they touched the car with the exception of the new windshield!!!!
