MB sells the parts still, but rebuilding a MB diesel engine is NOT for a typical mechanic to attempt. The factory service manual will get you started, but that manual was written for trained factory mechanics (in other words it leaves out a lot of detail). It will only be available online for a fee via startek, unless you can find an old copy on DVD somewhere.
I submit that you'll be way ahead by simply finding a healthy engine to start with, and focusing on the turbo and injection pump.
