It is my hope that Boeing and Airbus will not have to eventually manufacture in Asia to survive. I even wonder if composite components will eventually prevail in large commercial aircraft production. They are currently being used to some extent. . The Dreamliner comes to mind.
I do not know much about jet engine failure. I never have heard of the fan and shaft departing an engine before. Although at the rpms that fan operates at any problem causing a serious imbalance could tear even the shaft bearing supports out I suppose. The inertia forces could be massive.
Probably does not make the current operators of that series of engines all too happy. Especially if the actual cause cannot be identified. There may be too much evidence missing to ever really know. Also may be a reward for locating the remains of the missing components. That does not mean they will be found for certain. If I remember properly it was a really long period of time until a farmer found a whole jet engine that fell off a plane years ago. I think the reward was about 50K for anyone finding it.

Airbus has been using composite for quite some time. I believe the A300 that AA lost in NYC due the vertical stabilizer was all composite. AA used to have all polished aluminum hulls. If you look at the A300's they were painted grey. Now with the 787 they are all composite and are grey as well. AA wanted their fleet to be consistent so now everything is pained grey.
QF32 had an engine failure a few years ago. The #2 engine had a failure that cause more damage. One of the disks disintegrated due to a fitting that was improperly manufactured. The damage was contained in the nacelle (as designed) but did manage to cause damage to the landing gear, control surfaces, fire control ... etc. I do not quite understand how it is called a contained failure when external damage was caused. Never was curious enough to ask. The engine was a Rolls Royce engine.
I think the flight was already past Greenland when the engine failed and were about an hour out of Goose Bay, NF. So from the looks of the map, there is a good chance that the engine bits and pieces are on the bottom of the ocean.
