Note that there are two classes of ink jet printers. The kind where the print head is replaced every time you get an ink cartridge, and the kind where the print head is permanent, and the ink cartridge is just a tank to replenish the system.
If you try to run one of the permanent printhead printers dry, you will kill it because you can’t prime the system. That is why they stop short of completely running out and you can’t override it.
