Having owned and worked on one, it'd be either an OM617, or a GM V6 with a manual trans for me. I'm not sure if the 3800 with the supercharger would fit under the hood but I'd be measuring and pondering to see. I can't think of any compelling reason to go through the hassle of a modern Mercedes gas engine what with the degree of electronics. Maybe a sufficiently warmed over VW TDI.
Or, put modern EFI and ignition on an M110.
