You can get a workshop engine oil dipstick. ( it is different than the workshop trans stick ).

There was a thread a while back where the poster was battling ounces of oil level they were reading on the dash. Motor oil expands when hot like trans fluid and oil dripping from the cylinder heads leads to slightly varying levels not normally seen when checking with a regular stick.
