I never consciously link youtube and my phone. The common field between the accounts is my email address. Youtube has it. My Droid phone has it. Apparently Youtube has access to at least some of my cell data. I note that the US government is one of Google's largest customers.
"Overly alarmist" reminds me of the old joke....."I'm not paranoid. They're REALLY out to get me". I expect that no one is out to get me AND I've watched the government come down hard on people that didn't break any laws but simply reported the government's breaking of laws. Go back and review Watergate and the actions against Dan Ellsberg for an obvious example.
Early in Gulag Archipelago there was a statement (paraphrasing) "you don't think it can happen in the US....but it can". WE seem to be moving in that direction.
Back to Mercedes car repair: It's getting warm. I think I'll go adjust my valves.
