I measured the fan on my 960 and it certainly appears that it will fit with the clutch fan removed. Not driving the 960 right now, so may just pull it out and see if I can fit it in the parts car, then transfer the works to the wagon.

Good luck. What model Benz are we talking about? I also have a 960 and installed 960 fans on a 190e 2.3, volvo 240 and BMW 318is. On my 92 190e 2.6, 87 300d and 97 e300d the space was too tight. Going from memory the Volvo 960 fan motor is over 5" deep, that's what makes it so powerful.
This one has been running on my 190e 2.3 for 9 years now.
