There is an adjuster with a lock nut. Allen on the adjuster IIRC. The lock nut is 17mm IIRC. Loosen the lock nut and turn the allen counter clockwise with steering wheel straight ahead until you feel resistance then back off enough to free it up.

The boxes last a very long time and will take adjustment in my experience with well over 300K on them.

The boxes were in production and used with minor variations in 123 and 126 models at least...well until racks came into favor I imagine.
