Although some of the older owners manuals may indicate ATF, others indicate motor oil. ATF has gone through some really drastic changes since that manual was printed. It does not work well with the seals of that old transmission.

The last 350,000 miles or so of my 240D manual have been with Mobil one 10W30. If you insist on using ATF, find some type A.
