Yes black death occurs when maint,is not performed on injectors, new seals and cleaning.Saw one engine that top of head was caked bad.
The DI engine "problem" is the same issues that have bothered diesels with EGR for decades. Nothing new here, just the gasoline crowd having to learn to deal with valve and intake buildup due to no solvent action from a port or plenum fuel injector setup.

"Black death" in a CDI has absolutely NOTHING to do with maintenance. It's a design flaw that allows compression leak past a copper seal. There are updated parts to address the problem and it's well documented. Has anyone actually heard of an engine "dying" from this problem? I'd imagine not.

Why bother? The oil spray is only part of the problem, the rest is due to vapor deposits and carbon from the EGR system. Unless you have an oil consumption issue, you're wasting your time on the Mazda. They're not known for having major valve problems unlike some of the Fords.
