There are some pictures on my website showing the assembly of the IP for the W126. The W123 will be very similar, if not identical. Each of the three instrument sets are simply screwed to the back of the cluster.
WARNING: Do not remove the speedometer pointer. This is probably what you were referring to regarding a spring. A lot of these are calibrated by pre-loading the resistance/return spring. Removal of the pointer may cause loss of calibration of the speedometer.
