Are you saying the iron block has nothing to positively locate the intemidiate plate besides the bolts?

I pulled three of four bolts holding the intermediate plate on my original m117 out of the car and loosened the fourth. They are fully threaded and do not hold the plate in place accurately. There has to be dowels from the plate to the block or something. Also there are only the 2 bottom holes to bolt the plate to an alloy block, and there is a much larger rear main seal plate and almost no room for the plate to bolt to the left bottom bolt hole. I ran out of time and the engine is standing on the pan and plate's feet so I didn't pull it yet.
