My friend just bought a 1979 W116 that has all original paperwork documenting exactly this process from the original owner.
Paid for in full at Mercedes Benz of Santa Barbara, CA. They flew to Germany, took delivery of the vehicle, drove it around for a few weeks, then had the "used" car shipped to Long Beach.
Came with a nifty little grill badge for all that extra effort.
