This comes up quite frequently. Your automatic is a 4-speed. It simply starts in 2nd gear.
To test your first gear, at a standing stop, mash the gas pedal to the floor and hang on. It will pause just slightly then downshift and leap all at once.
The 2.3, with the ratios Duke has stated, has sufficient torque to economize with starting in 2nd gear.
You can also, from a standing start, pull the gear selector into the lowest gear and it will start in 1st.
